Hormone Replacement Therapy Q & A

Why would I need hormone replacement therapy?

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a treatment that can benefit women and men who are experiencing unpleasant symptoms of hormone decline. Many women have challenges with menopause as they age, and men can have issues relating to low testosterone.

Menopause is the midlife transition that all women go through, typically between 44 and 55. Some women do go through menopause earlier, but this is due to underlying medical conditions.

Your body naturally slows down estrogen and progesterone production as you enter your 40s, triggering what’s called perimenopause. This process can last for between four and seven years on average and is when you might start to experience your first symptoms.

Similarly, many men in this age group experience low testosterone or low-T. The decline in these hormones can cause fatigue and reduced libido.

HRT boosts hormone levels in your body, reversing some of the effects of menopause or low-T and making the transition less challenging.

What are the symptoms of menopause?

Symptoms of menopause can include:

  • Irregular menstrual bleeding
  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Mood swings
  • Irritability
  • Loss of libido
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Problems sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Thinning hair
  • Dry skin

These symptoms are due to a drop in the levels of the female sex hormones in your body. These hormones (estrogen and progesterone) are responsible for regulating fertility and managing your menstrual cycle.

Can anyone take HRT?

Before you start taking HRT, the team at LifeWell M.D. needs to make sure you’re a good candidate for this type of treatment.

If you have an increased risk of deep vein thrombosis or breast cancer, for example, taking HRT can make it more likely you’ll develop these conditions. Dr. Kumar needs to conduct a physical and review your medical history before deciding whether you’re a suitable HRT candidate.

If you don’t have any risk factors and are in good health, you can try HRT to see if it helps reduce your menopause symptoms.

How do I take HRT?

There are several ways you can take HRT:

  • Estrogen pills
  • Testosterone pills
  • Estrogen and progestin pills
  • Estrogen patch
  • Testosterone patch
  • Estrogen pellets
  • Topical estrogen (gel, cream, or spray)
  • Vaginal estrogen (cream, vaginal ring, vaginal pill)
