Living here in the “heart” of the Palm Beaches can lead to a very busy life, and we can often take our beating heart for granted simply because it doesn’t always ask for a lot of attention.

Our heart is an amazing organ that keeps beating day and night no matter how “tired’ we may feel at times, it doesn’t let us down… until.

This little organ—our heart—that’s about the size of your closed fist, beats approximately 100,000 times a day (60 to 100 beats per minute).

Each minute, the adult heart pumps about five quarts of blood throughout the body

It takes about 20 seconds for your blood to circulate throughout your entire vascular system.

If you were to measure all of the arteries, capillaries and veins in one adult, end-to-end, they would add up to about 60,000 miles. The smallest of the vessels—the capillaries—make up about 80 percent of this length.

To get an idea how vast that is, our vascular system could circle the circumference of earth 2.5 times!


So How Can We Take Better Care of Our Heart?

There are several things you can do to increase your heart health.

One way is simply by walking—every day or every other day for about 30 minutes (or as directed by your physician).

Some people get step trackers and set a goal for 10,000 steps every day.

Whatever works for you, whether it’s setting aside time for a morning walk or an after dinner walk. Perhaps taking part of your lunch time for shorter walk works better and finishing up later before or after dinner.

Whatever you do, just get (and keep) moving! Every organ in your body will thank you because they all depend on your heart’s health.
